RECORDED ORIGINALLY BY THREE YOUNG CONSCRIPTS OF THE OLD YUGOSLAV ARMY DOING THEIR MILITARY SERVICE IN TITOVO UŽICE, SERBIA IN THE SUMMER OF 1988: SAMIR ZILDŽIĆ FROM BOSNIA AND HERZEGOVINA, MIODRAG STANKOVIĆ FROM CROATIA AND MYSELF FROM VOJVODINA IN SERBIA.

THE SONG (WHOSE TITLE IN ENGLISH MEANS PERFECT CRIME) TALKED ABOUT A GROWING SENSE OF DOOM, THE ABYSS TOWARDS WHICH YUGOSLAVIA WAS HEADING, SPEAKING WITH A SENSE OF LIGHT-HEARTED DISBELIEF AND NOT A SLIGHTEST INKLING THAT WE, THE THREE YOUNG MEN RECORDING THE TRACK, WOULD FIND OURSELVES ON THE OPPOSING SIDES OF A BLOODY CONFLICT THAT DEVOURED THE COUNTRY ONLY A FEW YEARS LATER.

ALMOST THREE DECADES SINCE THAT ORIGINAL RECORDING SESSION, I ADDED A NEW SECTION TO THE LYRICS, WHICH REFLECTED OUR EXPERIENCES DURING THIS PERIOD AND RECONNECTED WITH SAMIR, WHOM I HAD LAST SEEN IN 1990, AND WHOSE VOICE I ALWAYS IMAGINED SAYING THOSE WORDS. I PITCHED HIM THE IDEA, SENT HIM A WORK-IN-PROGRESS TRACK AND HIS ONLY RESPONSE WAS: "WHEN ARE YOU COMING?"

SO NADIA AND I TRAVELLED TO BOSNIA IN AUGUST 2016 TO RECORD WITH SAMIR AT HIS WEEKEND HOUSE IN THE PICTURESQUE HILLS OVER GRAČANICA. THE LAST PIECE OF THE JIGSAW WAS MIODRAG'S GUITAR SOLO, WHICH WAS RECORDED UPON OUR RETURN TO LONDON THAT SAME YEAR, IN MIODRAG'S APARTMENT ON HIS WHITE 1972 FENDER STRATOCASTER HE HAD JUST ADDED TO HIS COLLECTION.

idem dalje ili da odustanem.
Kraj je blizu,
genije oseća krizu.
Želim da se moj
savršeni zločin otkrije.

Sećam se niz ulicu,
da li se to radujem,
oni koračaju, ne dišu,
a ja se osmehujem.

Kada pričamo
mi samo vičemo.
Naše talasne dužine
tako se drastično mimoilaze.
One ne biraju,
lako komuniciraju,
tebe naprosto negiraju
jer na njihovom jeziku
ne znaš da smeješ se.

Gledam u zid,
ne mogu da verujem
da u ovoj kući
i ja stanujem.

Druže stari, naučili smo neke stvari koje nikad nismo htjeli naučit',
kako izgleda čovjek bez čovječnosti, religija bez duhovnosti,
kraljevstvo budala, prvobitna akumulacija kapitala.
Kako da ne vidiš ono što vidiš, ne čuješ ono što čuješ,
ne razumiješ ono što razumiješ
i kako da ti je sve jasno kad o ničemu nemaš pojma.
Naučili kako da procijenimo čovjeka čim mu čujemo ime,
da ne saosjećamo sa majkom koja je izgubila sinove;
naučili da šutimo kada je krik jedina opcija.

Druže stari, klaso septembarska, trideset septembara prošlo je,
mi smo tada htjeli sve: spoznat' sebe, promijenit' svijet,
vidjet' sve, uradit' sve, naučit' sve. Ali nikad ovo, nikad ovako.
I pobjegneš daleko, ali se nikad ne pomakneš, ne zaboraviš,
jer taj bol je živ i danas kao i prvi dan
i ta ljubav nepromijenjena kao i onog septembra
kada smo svi bili isti i mislili da znamo sve, ali nismo znali ništa,
jer dok smo mi pjevali, pjesma nam se u stvarnost pretvorila.


Spuštam dlanove na sto
ali ništa ne osećam.
Ogledalo je nestalo,
sve se ovo ne događa.
